Workshops

We have a wide range of different workshops being offered to target all attendees and their interest that are both paid and free.  You are welcome to watch and learn without having to pay anything, subject to if there's enough space to watch.  For those who would like to participate in paid workshops, for majority of the paid workshops, tickets are available on Eventbrite for sale.  Some workshops are paid by cash at the door or separately through the workshop host.  Please read the descriptions below for more information.

Mississauga Workshops - Delta Hotel

Advanced Mold Making Workshop (Part 1) (Paid)
5:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Come learn how the professionals make molds for resin casting with the help of the props-master from Fantastic Creations. This is a six hour workshop, over two days! Learn step by step how to make a mold by actually doing it in this first of two, 3 hour hands on workshops. Come back on the next day to finish the second half of your mold to be ready to cast your piece in the Resin Casting for Props and Costumes Workshop. This is a pre-paid workshop. Those without tickets are welcome to watch or pay at the door to participate providing there are enough supplies left to accommodate.
Cost: $50 + applicable fees on Eventbrite per person.  Please note that this ticket includes this workshop and the Advanced Mold Making Workshops (Part 2) on Saturday at 6:30pm - 9:30pm

Gunpla's 30 Minute Mission Kitbash Workshop (Paid)

Come join us to learn the basics on how to kitbash your first kit. We will be covering the basic and advanced Kitbashing technique and different ideas that you could try on your own during this workshop.

Colour an existing design or create something completely original and then press it into your own button! Additionally, you can pre-make or design your buttons before Anime North and come by with your designs to press them into your own buttons with the template in this link. Kintsugi Lecture and Maki-e Workshop (Paid)

Learn about kintsugi, repairing with gold!  Followed by a maki-e workshop where we decorate gemstones using kintsugi.  Check @kintsugica on Instagram for examples of his work.

LED and Fiber Optic SFX for Kimono and Cosplay Costumes
12:30pm - 2:00pm
Electronically Enhanced Textile workshop presented by H. Lee Wainwright, the Grandfather of E-Textiles (www.hleewainwright.com) will feature several special effects technologies used in costumes he created for Britney Spears, Missy Elliot, Robin Williams, Isaac Hayes, Alexander McQueen, and other celebrities and designers.  He will be giving away free kits to the first 80 participants on a first come first served basis.

Gundam Workshop Sponsored by Bandai
2:30pm - 4:30pm
Have you ever built a Gunpla before?  Are you new into Gundam or a series veteran?  Well, this workshop is for you!  In collaboration with Plamod and Bandai, we invite you to join us at this special workshop to build and panel line your first Gunpla kit.  We'll be giving out ​70 kits on a first come first served basis (limit to 1 kit per participant) and tools will be provided for use on site for the duration of the workshop.  There will be prizes during the workshop!
First 70 people will be receiving a free kit to build during the workshop on a first come first served basis.

Gunpla's Iron-Blooded Orphans Workshop (Paid)

A few days ago, Gjallarhorn unleashed relented assault onto our homeworld of Mars.  Fortunately, our tools and Gundam frames are still intact. Come and join Tekkadan to build the remaining Gundam frames during the workshop with all the tools at your disposal.  Be assured that our field mechanics will guide you to build a Gundam frame able to withstand the harsh battle condition within the path to our freedom.

Japanese Paper Cutting (Paid)

Participants will learn the basics of paper cutting by creating a unique 5” x 7” work of art by hand. Materials provided. Visit the Japanese Paper Cutting booth in the Pro Plaza to register.

Kumihimo Workshop (Paid)

An introduction to Japanese braiding and its history. All supplies provided.  This is a pre-paid workshop.  Those without tickets are welcome to watch or pay at the door to participate providing there are enough supplies left to accommodate.

Origami for Beginners (Paid)

Learn the basics and history of origami and fold a crane (orizuru) along with an instructor.

Chado (Japanese Way of Tea) and the Daily Tea Ritual (Paid)
4:00pm - 6:00pm and 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Helen Kong from Secret Teatime will provide a demonstration of a basic procedure of Chado. The demo and presentation will cover the history, philosophy, and key concepts of the Way of Tea. After the demo, participants will team up in pairs to go through a simplified version of the matcha making ritual and serve each other tea.
Cost: $20 - includes a serving of a matcha.  Tickets available for sale at the Secret Teatime IG and booth in the Industry Area prior to the workshop.  Limited to 15 participants.

Gunpla's Witch From Mercury or The Origin (TBC) Workshop (Paid)

The Benerit Group Inc. have the honor to announce a mobile suit design competition within their branch companies.  This contest consists to design and build a new mobile suit with similar capabilities as the GUND-ARM technology implemented into the Gundam Aerial. Come and build at the Workshop to test your capabilities as a designer and as a builder.  You don't need to worry the lack of tools because Jeturk Heavy Machinery is kind enough to lent you their tools.  The engineers from Grassley Defense Sys. and Peil Tech. will assist you for your kit.

Resin Casting for Props and Costumes Workshop (Paid)
12:00pm - 3:00pm
Learn how to work with and cast resin with the help of the props-master from Fantastic Creations in this 3 hour workshop. You will get a chance to actually cast a piece and take it home with you. It will be $20 to participate and will be on a first come first served basis for a maximum of 30 participants. Priority will be given to those that participated in Mold Making on Friday and Saturday. Those who are not ready to get their hands dirty are welcome to watch and learn.  Those without tickets are welcome to watch or pay at the door to participate providing there are enough supplies left to accommodate.

Make you own Small Ceramic Cup (for tea or sake) (Paid)
9:00am - 11:00am
Helen Kong from Secret Teatime will teach participants how to pinch, form, and carve a small cup with clay. This cup can be for small sips of tea or sake or small amounts of deliciousness. Once you are done and choose to keep them, you can choose the colour of glaze and pre-pay the shipping. The pieces will be taken back to the studio for glaze and firing. The work will be shipped to the workshop participants in 3-6 weeks.
Cost: Special AN Discount at $25+HST (plus a shipping fee based on the shipping destination charged at the end of the workshop. Picking up at the Scarborough studio is available) Tickets available for sale at the Secret Teatime IG and booth in the Industry Area prior to the workshop. Limited to 15 participants.

Make your own Ceramic Mamezara (bean plate) (Paid)
11:30am - 1:30pm
Helen Kong from Secret Teatime will teach you how to make mamezara, small plates/dishes usually used for side dishes in a Japanese meal or they are good for holding small trinkets. Once you are done and choose to keep them, you can choose the colour of glaze and pre-pay the shipping. The pieces will be taken back to the studio for glaze and firing. The work will be shipped to the workshop participants in 3-6 weeks.

Learn from the master on how to make the perfect matcha and bring some home with you as well.

Men's Kimono (Paid)
3:30pm - 4:30pm
Kerry-Ann Simpson (aka Toyah) is a kimono maker. She learned the skill from a traditional kimono maker, but has adapted to making wafuku (traditional Japanese clothing) with materials available in the GTA and creating kimono that fit larger sizes. In this workshop she will talk about the components of Men's Kimono: how it is different from women's kimono, the proportions, and how to wear one. Attendees can try on a kimono to understand the process and fit and take selfies. Limited spots available for trying on kimono.
