Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese art and repair technique that restores broken ceramics using gold. Celebrated for its sustainability, it has come to be recognized around the world as a symbol of resilience.

The full Kintsugi process takes at least two months and uses no chemical materials. Instead, it relies on urushi, a natural tree sap that has been used in Japan for over 10,000 years, to bond fragments together and finish the surface with pure gold. This gold-application technique is known as maki-e.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the concept, materials, history, and philosophy of Kintsugi.

In the hands-on portion, participants will use the technique of maki-e to apply their own design to the gemstone pendant top in gold. (Part of the process involves brush-drawn line work.)

Gemstone variations to be chosen from during ticket purchase:

About your Design

The time allocated is 15 minutes for drafting and 30 minutes for Urushi drawing. As Urushi is a very viscous material, it must be applied very thinly. You need to move the brush slowly. Aim to spend 1 second drawing a 1mm line. Please choose a simple design, so you can finish your work in time! (Please refer to designs of previous attendees)

The organizer will provide the following stamps.

If you bring your own stamp, it must be cleaned using the designated method to remove urushi, which contains allergenic substances.

　① Wash it with canola oil until the urushi color is no longer visible

　② Wash it with soap

　③ Seal it in a Ziploc bag or similar with a small piece of damp paper towel for a week

At this workshop, we will clean your stamp with canola oil and wipe it off. It will then be returned to you in a bag along with a new pair of disposable gloves. Please complete the remaining steps at home.

The seasonal leaves will be a surprise on the day of the workshop.

If you bring your own leaves, please wash and dry them with water beforehand. Please also choose flat leaves. Three-dimensional items, such as flowers, are difficult to use for stamping.

Bring your very own anime character to life—literally—by creating your very own Animegao Kigurumi mask at Anime North 2026!   Join us for an exciting, hands-on workshop where you'll build a custom starter mask and step into the world of performance cosplay.

Whether you're a curious observer or ready to build, everyone is welcome! Attendance is free for observers who want to learn. For those who wish to create, a workshop fee of $175.00 covers all materials to build your own mask that is ready to wear for the rest of the convention! 

What You'll Do:

The workshop begins with an introduction to the art of Animegao Kigurumi—its history, famous makers, and fabrication techniques. Then, the real fun starts!

Paid participants will build a customized entry-level mask with choices including:

• Eye Designs & Colors: Pick the perfect look for your character.
• Eyelash & Eyebrow Styles: Add expressive details.
• Wig Style & Color: Complete the look of your mask with “Anime Hair” in a variety of colours. (Basic styling only due to time limitations.)

All workshop kigurumi masks are designed to present as female. However, participants of all genders are welcome and encouraged.

We will guide you every step of the way, including adding interior padding and making fit adjustments to ensure your mask is comfortable and ready to wear.

If you have a generic non-character specific cosplay such as a Lolita dress, maid uniform, kimono, or shrine robe please feel free to wear it to the workshop or bring it with you to change into at the end, so you can transform into your new Kig character once your mask is complete!  Note that while the mask kits provided at this workshop offer many possible variations, all masks are based on a generic shell that might not perfectly match a character you hope to mimic if you have one in mind; however, we will try their best to find the best match with the available customizations.

Here’s your chance to find out in this exclusive, full-immersion workshop at Anime North!  Come  experience what it’s like to perform as a Animegao Kigurumi Cosplayer.

This is a unique, hands-on opportunity to step into the costume and experience Kigurumi cosplay firsthand. All you need to bring is your own cosplay outfit—we provide the rest: a professional mask, foundation garments, and guidance every step of the way.

What to Expect:

• Learn the Basics: We’ll start with a short introduction to Animegao Kigurumi, covering costume components, performance expectations, posing, and how to act in character.
• Get into the Character: With the help of experienced Kigurumi performers, you’ll change into foundation garments, cosplay and have your mask fitted.

Character Creation

• We will cover the basics of creating a character. You will learn about races, backgrounds, class selections and how to create a balanced character with a rich backstory.

Stats and Gameplay

• We will start with generating ability scores and move to the explanations of combat systems. The character sheet will be explained as well as the mechanics of gameplay.

Creating Your Own Game

• We will also discuss possible pitfalls, share helpful hints and some homebrew ideas to consider when attempting to run your own game.

A Brief Adventure!

• Near the conclusion of the workshop, a few volunteers will take part in a quick encounter to practice what they have learned. Should they survive, prizes will be awarded...

This hands-on, beginner-focused workshop is designed as a guided, step-by-step learning experience led by cosplayer Kerokurino. The session is supported by Vega Theatrical Supplies, with materials provided for participants.

Rather than just demonstrating techniques, the workshop focuses on skill-building by breaking down each step so participants can follow along and learn how to apply the methods themselves.

Participants will work on a styled base inspired by Yuji Itadori (Jujutsu Kaisen), using a pink and black wig to practice techniques in a structured, approachable way.

Attendees will learn and actively explore key skills, including teasing for volume and structure, safe heat styling methods, and using hairspray and adhesives to build and secure spikes. Emphasis is placed on both the how and the why behind each technique, helping participants develop control, consistency, and confidence.

Throughout the session, common challenges will be addressed in real time, with practical solutions and workflow tips to make styling more manageable and repeatable for future projects.

As part of the workshop, participants will work on their own wig and take it home with them, allowing them to continue refining their styling beyond the session.

This is a technique-focused workshop designed to provide clear, transferable skills that can be applied to future wig projects.

Craft your own shuriken pendant in this easy and safe beginner-friendly workshop, hosted by Yozo Tanaka of Woodwork Studio Eramu.

Participants will hand-finish a wooden shuriken blank with sandpaper, and bring warmth to the wood with a beautiful wax polish. The finished piece is then strung onto a leather cord to complete the pendant.

We will make shuriken from two types of wood: ebony (black) and maple (cream).

The wax used is a blend of natural beeswax and linseed oil.  If you are allergic to beeswax and/or linseed oil, we ask that you refrain from participation.

Kerry-Ann Simpson (aka Toyah) is a kimono maker. She learned the skill from a traditional kimono maker, but has adapted to making wafuku (traditional Japanese clothing) with materials available in the GTA, and creates kimono that fit larger sizes. In this workshop she will talk about the components of Men's Kimono: how it is different from women's kimono, the proportions, and how to wear one. Attendees can try on a kimono to understand the process and fit and take selfies. Limited spots available for trying on kimono.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Pokémon.  To commemorate, we present to you two fun origami workshops. Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. In this second workshop we will fold a jumping Pikachu.  Beginners are welcome, although some experience with origami is recommended.  Paper will be provided.  You will be able to take home your creation, with which you can spend endless hours playing with.  If you make more you can have a Pikachu jumping match with your friends.

Learn the fundamentals of printmaking with the added whimsy of Lego! Printmaking is an age old skill with fandom applications like textile design, fanart, and zine making. 

In this workshop we'll explore the use of positive and negative space, print registration, what inks and print matrix to use, and the possible applications of printmaking in costume - all while being sustainable and accessible with Lego. You'll have the opportunity to design your own print block with Lego dots, or practice printing by using one of our pre-designed printing blocks

Sashiko is a method of fabric-reinforcement originating in Japan during the Edo period. In this workshop, Allie Davis (they/them), will help you create a patch to mend or embellish a garment, while giving you some of the historical and cultural context behind indigo dyeing and sashiko.

Step into the world of the samurai and experience the art of traditional Japanese swordsmanship.

Iaido (pronounced EE – EYE – DOH) is a classical Japanese martial art with over 400 years of history, focused on the art of drawing the sword with precision, composure, and control. Rooted in etiquette, posture, discipline, and attention to detail, Iaido preserves the mindset and movement of the samurai.

This 60-minute workshop is designed as both an interactive learning experience and a live martial arts showcase.

During the first half, we will introduce the fundamentals of Iaido, including:

• A brief discussion on what Iaido is and how it differs from other Japanese sword arts;
• Audience participation, where a limited number of participants will be provided a bokuto (wooden sword) to learn basic stances, movements, and cutting techniques;
• An introduction to kata — choreographed forms that simulate combat scenarios.

The second half will feature an extended live demonstration by members of our dojo, including:

• Multiple kata showcasing different scenarios and levels of difficulty;
• Kumitachi (paired sword forms) demonstrating timing, distancing, and controlled partner work;
• Performances by senior practitioners, including members of Team Canada Iaido.

Whether you’re curious about learning Japanese swordsmanship yourself or simply want to witness authentic samurai-era martial traditions brought to life, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to see and experience Iaido up close.

Focused on skill-building, the workshop teaches foundational techniques that can be applied to a wide range of props and armor projects. Participants will create a prop weapon inspired by the Inverted Spear of Heaven (Jujutsu Kaisen), using it as a practical framework to learn core construction techniques.

Attendees will begin with a brief overview of patterning, followed by a breakdown of essential materials, tools, and adhesives. The workshop then walks through core construction techniques, including cutting, shaping, and assembling foam pieces for clean, durable results.

Rather than focusing on completing a single prop, this session emphasizes understanding the full workflow—helping participants approach foam crafting from start to finish with confidence.

During the session, participants will begin creating a foam piece using the techniques covered and take their work home to continue building and refining.

Participants will leave with practical knowledge and techniques they can immediately apply to their own builds.
