Comic Market

The Comic Market is for Independent Illustration Artists, whose main focus is self-published 2D printed/painted media. Materials may vary between paper and canvas media. Most plastic, fabric, metal, or 3D material cannot be sold in this section.

Several major changes were made to the Comic Market Policy since 2018.

Who classifies as a registered artist in the Comic Market?

An applicant to the Comic Market must meet the following preliminary conditions:

  1. The Applicant is representing his/her individual body of work — without the use of a representative or agent — and has excluded any commercially published works or works represented by a commercial publisher;
  2. The Applicant will represent at least 50% of the merchandise on the table they are registered to.
  3. The Applicant must be at least 18 years of age by March 20, 2022, as per Ontario regulations, and be able to supply a Government-Issued ID.

Please note that tables cannot be filled by individuals whose names are not registered to the Comic Market.

Artists are responsible for reading the information stated here in full, and understanding all policies and restrictions before applying to the Comic Market. Anime North, Exhibitors and Comic Market Staff and volunteers are not responsible for failure to comply with stated policies.

Application Procedure

Anime North’s Comic Market application is a full lottery.

To submit a lottery ticket request, the Applicant must fill the online form on Sunday, March 20, 2022, between 12:00 pm and 11:59 pm. Please review the requirements listed in the section below as you will need to supply the information during that time.

As of 2018, lottery numbers are no longer sent out to Applicants. Applicants will receive an email confirming their entry on March 27, 2022. If an Applicant has not received one by the afternoon of March 27, 2022, we advise the Applicant to contact us at [email protected] .

Comic Market Staff will contact the Applicants picked in the lottery as well as those added into the waiting list by the evening of April 3, 2020.

Applications can be submitted through this link during the specified window:

  6. Represent his/her/there own body of work and not act as a proxy or representative for another artist.

If you identify yourself a Trans* (i.e. transgender, intersex, genderqueer or otherwise) artist, there will be a portion on the online lottery application form so you may inform** the Comic Market Staff of any concerns regarding your legal and your gender expression names. This is NOT for artists who wish to put their nicknames on their badges; this applies ONLY for trans artists. If you wish for this consideration, you must advise staff during the lottery application so that they are aware.

**N.B.: This is for legal and administrative purposes and will not affect your eligibility to the Comic Market.

Table Information

The Applicant is offered one table maximum, no exceptions.

An artist table measures approximately 2’ x 6’ and can have a maximum of two (2) chairs.

  • Table with one artist admission costs: $185.00 CAD + 13%HST
  • Secondary Artist or Helper admission (max of 1) costs: $70.00 CAD
  • Table cloth deposit costs: $10.00 CAD

The Applicant must purchase their Secondary Artist or Artist Helper’s admission through the Comic Market. Please refer to Secondary Artist/Artist Helper Section for further information.

Artist badges must be visible at all times when the artist is inside the convention facilities as per agreement with the Anime North Convention Policy. Even if the individual is cosplaying, he/she is required to follow this rule without question.

Tables may only be set up by the primary Applicant and his/her Secondary Artist/Artist Helper. They may not bring in non-artists (i.e. anyone without an artist badge or not registered to the artist areas of the convention) to help with set up. If additional help is needed, volunteers designated by Comic Market Staff will be available during setup.

Secondary Artist/Artist Helper

Once the Applicant is confirmed a table, the option to add an Artist Helper or a Secondary Artist to the table will be made available.

If you wish to add an Artist Helper or Secondary Artist to your table, you will need to contact [email protected] to receive instructions. There will be an online form supplied by the Comic Market Staff for the primary Artist to fill in.

Please note that an Artist Helper or a Secondary Artist must pass and meet the requirements listed in section Registration Requirements, and have the required information ready for submission when requested.

Artist Helpers do not need to submit any artwork samples.

All Secondary Artists or Artist Helpers are required to sign and submit a contract, different from the Primary Artist’s, to be a valid participant in the Comic Market. This contract will be supplied by Anime North Comic Market Staff after the request from the primary Applicant has been approved.

Table Cloth Rental

The Applicant is welcome to supply and use their own table cloth as Comic Market tables do not come with a table cloth.

If the Applicant requires a table cloth, Comic Market rents them for $10.00 CAD/each. Advance rental must be made before the cut off date (to be announced later) to ensure supplies as only a limited supply will be available for onsite rental during sign-in.

Comic Market Policies & Rules

Artists may sell and create their art and merchandise in the Comic Market, so long as the content sold at their table does not include copyrighted images that are already licensed by other companies.

Only the artwork of the artists registered to the table may be sold at that table. They may not represent any artist that is NOT present at their table or registered with the Comic Market at any time.

As of 2018, Acrylic Printed Keychains and Vinyl-type stickers will be permitted for sale in the Comic Market. This is the only new exception for this year.

The sale of collaborative doujinshis, art books, and original comics is only allowed if the collaborating artists are present at the convention OR if a waiver form is produced — one that is signed and dated by all artists involved — allowing the sale of the item at Anime North 2022. Note that this exception does NOT include collaboration prints.

As of 2018, Acrylic Printed Keychains and Vinyl-type stickers are permitted for sale in the Comic Market. However, Acrylic Standees are not permitted for sale and will be confiscated if any stock is present at the convention.

Photographs and photo-manipulations may only be sold if the Artist is the model. Photographs and photo-manipulations of inanimate objects may only be sold if they were taken by the Artist and are not stock photos or modifications of existing stock photos.

Proxy Selling of Merchandise

The Comic Market emphasizes that an Applicant must not sell any artwork or merchandise made by other artists. Failure to comply will result in the forfeiture of the participant or participants’ table(s), and future applications by all parties involved will be automatically denied.

If the Applicant is interested in selling their work through a representative, please refer to Anime North’s Gallery Momiji for more information.

Preorder Sales of Merchandise

The Comic Market allows transactions of preorder sales so long as they remain to be paper media items (i.e. prints, comic books, artbooks) created by the Artists registered to the table. Using the Comic Market table as a pick-up station for trades and sales of items (i.e. cosplay items, costumes, commissioned crafts, etc) not permitted to sell at the rented space is prohibited. Such transactions must be arranged outside the convention.

Please refrain from bringing or displaying prohibited items for sale in the Comic Market tables.

Holding raffles at the Comic Market is prohibited.

Collaborative Works

Print Collaborations

Print collaborations are only allowed for sale in the Comic Market if they involve a maximum total of two (2) individual artists who are registered and present at the Comic Market. There are no exceptions to this rule; waivers will not be accepted from artists that are not present in the Comic Market.

Doujinshi & Fan Fiction

Doujinshi to be sold in the Comic Market must contain 85% art. Fanzines or fanfictions are not allowed to be sold in the Comic Market, although original illustrated novels are. A signed waiver is required from all artists who have participated in the creation of the doujinshi or illustrated novels.

As of 2019, Artists may not use free standing displays behind/around their tables. They may have a display set up on their table, for a maximum of 10 ft from the ground up (table included). This display must be secure, be stable, not interfere with other Artists’ spaces and not violate any Anime North and/or Toronto Congress Centre regulations. The reserved space is limited to the area provided by the convention.

If the applicant’s display falls or harms another participant or attendee, they will be asked to take the display down immediately.

Tables and chairs supplied to participants by the venue should not be used as ladders or supports for displays. The Applicant must be aware that the convention and the venue is not liable for any injuries sustained by the mentioned activity before, during, and after the convention.

Balloons are not permitted inside the venue and may not be used for displays. They will be asked to remove these items from the premises immediately, and the Applicant will pay for any fines issued by the venue.

Prohibited actions surrounding displays are as follow:

  • Labelling with trademarked/copyrighted names/titles on sale items or displays;
  • Attaching anything to the walls/glass surfaces by tacks, pins, tape or any other means;
  • Drilling holes, driving nails, hooks, screws or tacks, or making any alterations to any part of the Center or its equipment, including the tables;
  • Using helium balloons as a give-away item or as part of a fixed display;
  • Using tables and chairs as ladders to reach displayed work.

Displays overhanging into other Artists’ tables, doorways, corridors, safety exits or any other area outside the reserved space is not allowed.
