Staff & Volunteers

Would you like to be involved in Anime North?

Are you interested in joining the staff of the convention?

The best way to get involved is to volunteer to help out at the convention itself. Put in volunteer hours in the department you are interested in joining (Masquerade, Registration, etc.), learn some of the ropes, and convince us you're really willing to put in the works it takes to pull off an Anime North.

Volunteer Information

Anime North needs plenty of volunteers over the convention weekend to help run the con. Why should you volunteer? Well, there’s the warm fuzzy feeling you get for helping to make the convention possible, thereby bring much joy and happiness to your fellow attendees. And of course we offer a range of volunteer rewards depending on how many hours you work.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please read the Volunteering FAQ for complete details.

If you send your name and a valid email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , you’ll be added to a mailing list, and kept informed on matters such as the Volunteers Orientation Meeting, to be held about a month before the con.

PLease note the volunteer crash space will NOT be offered this year, due to lack of hotel room space.

Note that if you are NOT at least 18 years old, your parents or guardians MUST sign the Volunteering Waiver Form (click to download DOCX) , and you must bring this form to the convention. Please DO NOT mail it to the convention.

High School Community Service Requirement

Ontario high schools require students to have put in 40 hours of volunteer community service in order to graduate, and we are often asked if volunteering for Anime North can count towards those hours.

The hours count if the person from the school who decides if you completed all your hours wants them to count.

We've been told no by various schools, many students have been told no, while others have been allowed to count them.

The convention does not have the time or resources it takes to figure out what schools do or don't count them, not with all the other work that goes in to putting the con on.

So if anyone wants us to vouch that they worked the hours, we'd have no problem doing that as long as they really worked the hours. But it's up to each student to find out beforehand whether the hours will be counted for them or not, and whether it makes a difference if they volunteer in certain areas (charity auction, access dept) and if it does, to let the volunteer coordinator know that you want to volunteer for those areas and why.

Does Anime North offer Crash Space for Volunteers?

A: Unfortunately, due to the high amount of volunteers Anime North has every year and limited hotel room space, the Volunteers Department will no longer be offering Crash Space to volunteers.

The one exception to this will be volunteers who work at our late night dances at the TCC, and only if they stay until the end of the dances.

If I plan on volunteering at the convention, do I still have to pre-register or buy a membership?

A: Yes, you must register for Anime North BEFORE you can sign up as a volunteer at the volunteer’s desk (to be in the Doubletree hotel). If you work enough hours, you can earn your membership fees back.

What will I do as a volunteer?

A: Anime North needs volunteers to help out with general events around the convention. Examples include stuffing registration packages, helping to keep an eye on line-ups and video rooms, and helping out backstage at the Masquerade.

If I’m interested in volunteering for the con, what should I do?

A: You should email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your name and a valid email. This way you’ll receive email updates, and the forms you’ll need to fill out to volunteer. Or, you could just show up at the Volunteer’s Desk at the con and ask to sign up.

I’m under 18, can I still volunteer?

A: Yes, but you’ll need to get your parents to sign their consent on the volunteer waiver form. Download this from the main page, have them sign it, and bring it to the con.

Can I sign up for anything in advance?

A: We’ll have a volunteer’s orientation meeting about a month before the con. (Send email to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) to be placed on the list to hear about this. Note that you DON’T have to attend this meeting in order to volunteer for the con, it is for information purposed only.

What can I get Double Hours for?

A: Note that DOUBLE volunteer’s hour will be available ONLY for working at the Masquerade (Saturday night) and the Manga Library (All weekend).

Double Hours for reg pack stuffing are being discontinued as we will no longer be doing a formal stuffing on Friday and Saturday, due to a lack of donated items to stuff. Volunteers will still be needed during each day to directly hand out the Program Book and Pocket Program as attendees go thru Registration.

What’s the reward structure for so-many-hours worked?

A: The updated (2012) reward structure, along with the volunteer timesheet, can be found here.

Does volunteering for Anime North count towards my 40 hour high school community service requirement?

Where will the Volunteers Desk be at the Convention?

A: The main Volunteers desk will be in the International Foyer of the Doubletree Hotel (please see you Pocket Program map when you arrive at the convention). Starting in 2012, there will also be a volunteers desk at the TCC as well, next to the Information Desks.
