Each participant is restricted to ONE doll in the Doll Masquerade, they will be asked to remove any additional dolls in their display area during the judging period.

Each entry will be judged on Display, Presentation, and Portfolio by our esteemed panel of judges. (Please see below for details on each component)

It is strongly encouraged that participants keep their character cosplay design within that decade range if their chosen anime or manga was on-going past 1999. (Please use 90’s character designs).

For a list of Anime and Manga produced during 1990 to 1999 please see:

All participants must remain present during judging to answer judge’s questions regarding their entry.

All participants will be required to produce at least one reference picture that clearly depicts their chosen character in the outfit they have replicated. (Further details are given in the judging breakdown)

Judging Breakdown

Display

The Display Component is worth 70% of your evaluation.

  • Outfit: Outfit components can be handmade or purchased, greater points will be awarded to entrants that have hand crafted their outfits. Pattern-making is not being judged, but you will be awarded additional points for pattern-making if you have provided proof in the portfolio component. You will be judged based on workmanship, execution, and adherence to the overall theme.

  • Accessories: Items not expected to be handcrafted such as wigs, shoes, eyes, hardware, and belts will be judged for their adherence to the theme material and how well they incorporate with the entire outfit. Bonus points can be awarded for handmade items such as wigs, shoes, and eyes as long as documentation is provided in the portfolio.

  • Props: Props: Points can also be earned for prop creation when applicable to the theme material, only props that have been handmade will impact the Display Component. Documentation in the portfolio is required.

  • Face Up: Bonus points can be awarded to dolls with customised face ups to match their title inspiration. Documentation in the portfolio is required.

Presentation

The Presentation Component is worth 15% of your evaluation.

You will be judged on posing and how your doll is displayed: does the presentation tell a story or reflect the desired theme material?

Is your doll ‘in character’ have you included any additional items to set a scene? We ask that you keep these items within reason. Your presentation space is restricted to 2 feet wide, please stay within these confines.

Portfolio

The Documentation Component is worth 10% of your evaluation.

The Portfolio Component is worth 15% of your evaluation.

Your are expected to bring at least one photo reference of your theme inspiration. This will allow the judges to compare your work with the source. It is encouraged to use screen grabs, official images, licensed products etc versus fan art. If your source has both manga and a TV show/game please bring images from the media you used for reference.

The Portfolio should document your creation progress with photos, patterns, fabric swatches, and/or anything you feel would help demonstrate the work you put in to your entry. There’s no specific length for the portfolio or format - please note that the judges will be using your portfolio to help grade your craftsmanship and skill.

Judges

The judging panel will consist of esteemed individuals of notable standing in the doll community, judges will be announced at the event to avoid favoritism or tampering.
